After having learnt different words regarding classroom objects and stationery, which are included in our curriculum, our first graders worked on some relevant activities and played some exciting games.
In the beginning, we had our young learners write labels of various classroom objects on slips of colourful paper and then stick them to the correct objects. The students worked collaboratively in groups and tried to retrieve vocabulary they already knew. Through this procedure, students practised spelling and pronunciation of the relevant vocabulary. Meeting words again and again helps students remember them. Students need to re-encounter a word between six and sixteen times in order to remember it.
Later on, they were asked to complete a worksheet by counting and colouring some school objects according to the instructions provided. This way students not only reviewed vocabulary related to classroom objects but also had the chance to revise the numbers and colours that they had already been taught.
These engaging and motivating games and activities not only give our young learners the chance to review vocabulary but also promote communicative competence and generate fluency.
